Chapter Twenty

LISA

Previously, I told Tonya that her friendship with Denise would be all right; little did I know that I was speaking somewhat prophetically. I just didn’t think it would take what it did to get those two back together again, but I guess it’s true when they say, there is always a blessing in tragedy. Whatever the case, we have to help our friend do what is needed to make sure Bernard never bothers her again. After we went to Denise’s hotel room so she could shower and change into some clean clothes, we go to my parents’ home to talk to my sister. I figure free legal advice is better than none. Knowing my sister like I do, she knows a whole lot about the law and what Denise should do. Walking into the front door of my parents’ house, I wasn’t surprised to see a few kids in the living room with my mother. My brother Mike’s kids are there…mom calls herself helping my sorry brothers out, by watching their kids for free, while their baby mommas’ tried to work their minimum wage jobs. Since my brothers did not stay employed on a consistent basis, you would think they would be there to help out. That might take place in another lifetime, but surely not in this one.

“Mom, is Nyla here?” I ask, kissing my mother on her cheek.

“She said she’ll be right back. Something about a book or something or other, child, I don’t know,” my mother answers as she rocks the youngest baby of the three she’s taking care of on her knee. Denise greets and kisses my mom on her cheek, then picks up my only nephew as she takes a seat on the sofa.

“What are you girls up to today?” my mom wants to know. I love my mom dearly, but I know I can’t let her all up in Denise’s business because she is not tactful at all.

“We just have some legal questions to ask Nyla, that’s all,” I respond, trying not to make a big deal out of it.

“I know you don’t want to tell me,” mom states, as she takes the baby in her lap to the play pen in the middle of the living room. She takes my nephew from Denise along with one of my nieces, to the kitchen, but she can’t resist saying, “Well, let me get these two some lunch and give you all some privacy. Humph! I don’t want to know! Let me go on and feed these little rug rats, but you know I‘ll be back.”

Denise and I look at each other and laugh, because we both know my mother doesn’t just want to know, she needs to know. As soon as mom thinks she knows, she will just have to run across the street and tell Tonya’s mother all about it, and even then, she still won’t get it all straight. That’s my mom, and I love her, but this is one situation she will not have a chance to tell anyone about until it’s all over.
